How many diapers does a newborn use a day?

In shortIn the first month, a newborn goes through about 8 to 12 diapers a day, says Pampers, and our count uses 10. Up to 6 months, that adds up to about 1,432 diapers in sizes N, 1, and 2. Buy by your baby's weight, not age, a few packs of each size at a time.

Up to 6 months, one baby uses about 1,432 diapers. To have at home before the birth, with the balanced approach (the expected use of each size up to 6 months): 1,432 diapers, in 12 packs.

After 6 months: Size 2 keeps going, with about 318 more until age 1; Size 3 comes in at 18 to 28 lb (8.2 to 12.7 kg), with about 780 until age 1.

Each brand and line uses its own weight ranges. Size up by your baby's weight and fit (red marks, leaks), not by age.

A baby born over 10 lb may skip size N. If an ultrasound estimates a big baby, buy few size N diapers.

Cotokim's list puts the diapers together with everything else, by your city's climate and your due date.

Pampers lists about 8 to 12 diapers a day from birth to 1 month, 8 to 10 at 2 to 4 months, 7 to 9 at 5 to 8 months and 6 to 8 at 9 to 12 months 1. The ranges in the table are the ones we use for our list in Brazil, and we did not find a U.S. government health source with daily diaper changes by age: the ranges and our count, one number per age band, are a Cotokim proposal.

Pampers says to choose the size by your baby's current weight 2, and each brand has its own ranges: Huggies Little Snugglers goes up to 10 lb in Newborn and 8 to 14 lb in size 1 3. The packs use the middle pack size we saw on the brands' pages, 122 diapers in size N and 164 in size 1 4: a Cotokim proposal, since club boxes are bigger and small packs are smaller.

How we calculate

  • One number of changes per age band, from the table above (a Cotokim proposal).
  • The size by weight, day by day. The WHO median weight curve 6 sets when a typical baby reaches each weight: size N lasts up to day 31 for a boy and up to day 41 for a girl.
  • Packs rounded up, so a few spare diapers stay in the last pack.

Wet diapers in the first days

In the first week, the CDC lists a minimum number of wet diapers that goes up each day: 1 on day 1, 2 on day 2, 5 on day 3 and 6 on day 4 5. If your baby has fewer wet diapers than that, talk to your baby's health care provider right away 5.

The changes a day and their ranges, the same we use in Brazil, and the diaper counts are a Cotokim proposal: Pampers gives its own ranges, and we did not find a U.S. government health source with them. The wet diaper minimums of the first days come from the CDC. Checked by the Cotokim team against the sources on this page. It does not replace advice from the health care team that looks after you and your baby.

Frequently asked questions

How many newborn size diapers should I buy?

Our count gives 348 size N diapers, about 3 packs. A baby born big may move to size 1 early, so we suggest buying one or two packs of N first and adding more as you go.

When does a baby move up to size 1?

By weight, not age 2. On the WHO median curve, a typical baby reaches size 1 from day 31 to day 89 for a boy and from day 41 to day 119 for a girl 6, and every baby grows at their own pace.

How many diapers until 6 months?

About 1,432 in our count, in sizes N, 1, and 2.
